Getting your dog to sit can be a difficult task depending on the age and breed of your dog. I know that for my own dog that it took me about a month and a half to teach him how to sit. However, I wanted to ensure that he would sit to make sure that he would listen to me on a simple command prior to me getting him in a show arena or other area that I really need him to listen to me at. Here is a great tip that can help you with getting your dog to sit.

The tip that I have found that helped me out the most is once my dog had a basic understanding of sitting was to make him sit each time before he got his food. While I would give him his food even if he didn't sit after getting told to sit about ten times I found that he would sit well before I reached that point and it got to the point that I just have to say sit to him and now he sits down without having to be told several times.

However, you have to get your dog to the point of understanding the basic concept of sitting you are going to want to make sure that you have them in some form of a training program. Here is one of the best dog training program that you can find on the internet.
